About

Heather Carisch is an American artist based out of Los Angeles innovating a new methodology combining painting, printmaking, and macrophotography. Her work has been included in multiple museum exhibitions, including the Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts in Brownsville, Texas in 2017; The Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, Montana in 2011 and 2010; the Holter Museum of Art in Helena, Montana in 2007; and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2007 and 1997. In 2016 her work was awarded best-in-show by Jenna Jacobs, curatorial manager for the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and in 1996, as part of an exhibit juried by Fiona Ragheb, curator of the Guggenheim, her work was featured in the New York Times. Among the many public and private collectors of Carisch’s work is the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota; the Huntington Medical Research Institute in Pasadena, California; Bill and Melinda Gates; and Gerard Cafesjian.

Carisch studied at the Studio Art Centers International and holds a B.A. in Art and Business from Western State College University, where she was a three-time All-American alpine racer and NCSA Alpine National Champion. She studied beneath world-renowned glass blower Dale Chihuly and installation artist Donald Lipski, and began experimenting with printmaking techniques and developing her own form of artistic expression while working at a gallery in downtown Minneapolis’s Kenwood neighborhood.

Carisch’s new body of work comprises of layered, gestural compositions incorporating bold colors and fluid lines. Her current methodology, originated in 2011 after she began preserving the Plexiglass used for monoprints, admiring their informality in design, combines painting and printmaking techniques with the application of macrophotography. It’s a process of meditative movement inspired by Carisch’s synergistic relationship with nature, as evidenced by a former collection that drew upon Hookipa, a famous surf spot off the coast of Maui, and focuses the viewer’s gaze on patterns and textures normally too obscure for the naked eye. Her world of brushstrokes and color offers the viewer a more intimate understanding of mimesis.
